Although Katie Clawson's summer vacation is winding down, she looks forward to going back to school and becoming a fifth grader. Then, just days before Labor Day, a letter arrives with news that fills her mind with worry her class will be noticeably different from her best friend Melissa's. But changes can be for the better, as Katie’s mother explains. Since her new classroom will have two teachers, kids with special needs will be able to learn alongside their typical peers. On the first day of school, Katie feels lonely without Melissa and her old classmates around, and she tries to befriend the girl sitting next to her. Unfortunately, Brianna’s autism makes it difficult for them to have a conversation. With encouragement from Mr. Appleton, one of her teachers, Katie uses a special way to talk to Brianna and discovers they have more in common than meets the eye. Included with the story is a guide containing cooperative reading and communication activities for typical kids and their peers with autism.

The September Surprise A Story about Kids and Autism eBook Ryan Ennis

The September Surprise is not a sequel in the strict sense of the word. We do meet some of the same characters sharing the same problems. As the story begins at the end of the summer, Katie is eagerly awaiting a letter from Parker Elementary School informing her who will be her fifth grade teacher. She is hoping that it will be Mr. Sanders or Mr. Greenley. Instead she finds out that her teachers will be last year’s teacher, Mrs, Burnette along with Mr. Appleton. Katie is convinced that she needs reading help because she is in a class with two teachers and last year Mr. Appleton taught the autistic students. To make matters worse, she finds out that her friend Melissa is in Mr. Greenley’s class. Melissa suggests that maybe Katie did not so so well on her reading test.

On the first day of school Katie reluctantly enters the class and finds herself paired with an autistic child named Brianna, who has echolalia, which means that she repeats everything Katie says. Katie is not amused. She wants Brianna to respond and gets more suggestions from Mr. Appleton. When Katie hears about a writing contest, she is determined that will find a way to communicate with her partner, make her a friend, and win that contest! Katie is beginning to think that this class is a special one and not in the negative way she thought originally.

Ennis presents parents, educators and students with an explanation of autism and a wealth of information on how to handle it. Autism encompasses many issues, and no two autistic children have the same needs. Ryan succeeds by using a simple story with believable characters that make it more understandable and meaningful. The reader will walk away with greater knowledge and compassion.

The September Surprise A Story about Kids and Autism eBook Ryan Ennis Reviews

Although I have heard the word autism used for years, I admittedly knew very little about it. I almost inadvertently stumbled across this book because I had picked up one of the authors other titles, and was interested in seeing what else he had written. What I found here was a story that is easily and quickly read, yet is very engaging. It would be an excellent book for sharing with children as well as with other adults who need a basic introduction to the topic. The book also includes study questions as well as other information. I found the book to be very helpful in raising my awareness of autism and some of the ways it can be manifested. It was also helpful to know a bit about how regular and special needs classrooms can be blended to the benefit of all the students. I am now interested in learning more about the topic.
A nice story on autism and how to educate young children on Autism. It also contains a brief guide on what is autism and how care givers, family members and educators can help such kids.
Pretty good story for raising autism awareness among kids. As an adult on the spectrum (Asperger's), I am always glad to see kids taught about autistic spectrum disorders and especially like how the author makes it clear that not all kids with autism are exactly alike or share the same problems or level of problems. I didn't really need all the information at the end of the book, so I kind of skipped over a lot of it, but I can see how it would be useful for teachers.
THE SEPTEMBER SURPRISE A Story about Kids and Autism by Ryan R Ennis is a book that gives the perspective of a 5th grade girl that is being place in a co-taught classroom (Katie) and some of the students in the classroom with disabilities. When Katie arrives at school she is very upset that she is not in class with her best friend. The teachers are doing things very different than Katie is used to in school. There are many students in the class with autism and Katie remembers some of them from last year when she did a reading program with these children. The morning in class does not go well for Katie because she shared a table with Brianna who has autism. Brianna has a hard time with communication and is mocking Katie's questions for her. At recess Katie talks with one of the teachers about the problems she is having and learns new ways of communicating to help Brianna. After recess Katie tries the new ways of communication and becomes friends with Brianna who is very excited to have Katie as a friend. In the book the teachers use many ways to help all students with adapting to the new school year and new classroom. They use picture charts and a schedule to help the students with autism with the changes. The book displays many ways to help children with autism as well as how to help other children become comfortable with children with disabilities. The author also gives a good view of both Katie and Brianna's reactions to school and the different things that are going on during the day. Over all this was a great book to read and to share with school students.
This would be a great book to share in any classroom with 1st grade and above. The teacher would be able to use this book to show students what an inclusive classroom is like and how it can be different than the classroom they are in. I would use this to help explain how an inclusive classroom regardless of the disabilities can be helpful for all students regardless of disabilities. I could also use this book to show students that being in an inclusive classroom can be a great thing for the students that they are able to help and become friends with.
I enjoyed learning about kids with autism that I did not know about. Sure I had heard the phrase and perhaps seen one or two in my lifetime but this sure helped me to understand then better now. Thank you Ryan! I recommend this ebook for young and older kids and adults as well. Because of this new info on autism I feel that this needs a five star rating. I received this ebook for free and have after reading the story, have given it an honest review. Great work Ryan! By Angela
